KOPERASI MALAYALEE MALAYSIA BERHAD
In the year 2009, AMMA took another big step and formed a Cooperative Society for Malayalees to serve as its Economic arm. Known as “Koperasi Malayalee Malaysia Berhad”, it was officially launched on 1 May 2009 at the 34th Annual Delegates’ Conference of AMMA at the Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort, Taiping, by YB Dato’ S.K. Devamany, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
Donation drive for Kerala flood victims
“We sympathise with the people in Kerala in the wake of the calamity that has claimed many lives and wreaked havoc and widespread destruction in the state."
“Our thoughts and concern go out to the many victims and their families. Amma is in the midst of coordinating relief aid to the affected flood victims,” said Rajan. He said many Malaysians have close family ties and roots in Kerala and empathise with their suffering and plight.
“We appeal to all our members and the wider Malaysian community to donate generously to alleviate the hardship and suffering of the people in Kerala who share a close-knit bond and ancestral ties with the Malaysian Malayalee diaspora,” he added.
Rajan said for a start, Amma will donate RM20,000 from its charity fund to ease the plight of the worst affected victims in Kerala. Kerala has been severely hit by massive floods since May 29 this year following a deluge and heavy rains that forced the authorities to open the shutters on all its dams in an unprecedented move to avoid further loss of lives and destruction.MOore than 700,000 people have sought shelter in various camps throughout the state after floodwaters ravaged their homes and left many dead. The floods that left the state virtually paralysed, was described as the worst in recent years.
Rajan, who was elected Amma executive council president at the 43rd Annual Delegates Conference in August, urged those who wished to assist the flood victims to contribute generously to the All Malaysia Malayalee Association donation drive.
